Eye Exam

What is the optometrist looking for in an eye exam?

Several tests are done during a standard eye exam. First, the eye structurally, both inner and outer surfaces are examined. Then, we’ll take a thorough history of your medical health and ask questions about your eyesight.

Next, we can do eye pressure checks and visual acuity tests and look for problems in depth. Then, finally, we look for any abnormalities and potential problems.

What’s the difference between a regular eye exam and a contact lens exam?

A regular eye exam will check your eyes for health, structural changes, and test for vision improvement. A contact lens exam will also use special testing to measure your eye to find what contact lens size is best for you. There can also be a tear film evaluation to ensure you produce enough tears to wear contact lenses comfortably.

These vision prescriptions are different because contact lenses fit on your eye versus glasses 12mm or so from the look. You can’t use a glasses prescription for contacts, or vice versa.

What will I need after testing?

After your comprehensive eye exam for glasses or contact lenses, you will have your prescription. Then, you can choose your frames or speak with us about daily wear or extended contacts. You may also want to decide whether to get clear or colored lenses that alter the color of your eyes.

Is the eye exam uncomfortable?

While there isn’t any pain, some patients may have discomfort at specific parts of the exam. For example, looking at a bright light or during the pressure test, some patients may have slight discomfort, but in general, eye exams are safe, painless, and necessary for the long-term health of your eyes and vision.
